We recently became the owners of our first property—an exciting milestone, and the start of some BIG plans to improve the home for more space, comfort, and convenience.
The plan: turn the roof space into usable storage
Our first project is converting the roof space into an attic for storage. Like many new homeowners, we started out feeling ambitious and assumed timber beams would be the easiest structural option.
But the more we looked into it strength, long-term performance, and structural reliability. The less confident we felt about timber being the best solution for what we wanted to achieve.
The pivot: “Let’s use structural steel instead”
Structural steel felt like the obvious upgrade: strong, straight, and built to last. Problem solved… right?
Not quite.
Why steel isn’t a simple swap
In modern construction, structural steel beams aren’t just added in as an afterthought. They form part of the building’s structural system, meaning they’re typically:

There is a common misconception that cracked walls are always the result of poor construction practices or inadequate reinforcement during the building process.
While there are situations where workmanship or materials may be at fault, the reality is that cracks are a normal part of most buildings, and in many cases, no one is to blame. In this article, we explore why cracks occur and how to determine whether they are cosmetic or a sign of something more serious.
Why do cracks occur?
When cracks appear in walls or floors, the immediate assumption is often that the building materials have failed. In truth, concrete comes with two unavoidable guarantees: it will harden, and it will crack.
Cracking occurs due to a combination of factors, including:
- Thermal expansion and contraction
- Drying shrinkage as concrete cures
- Internal or external restraints
- Subgrade movement or soil settlement
- Applied structural loads over time
Because these influences often act together, cracking is not unusual and

One of the joys of owning your own home in Perth is that from time to time you will feel the urge to start a DIY project.
Whether you are doing expansions to your house or adding some new landscaping to your garden, there is always a component of building and project management involved that would require some expert advise.
This week we focus on an interesting project where the DIY project involves adding new life to the garden by making use of cement slabs to create a terrace slope down the garden from the patio.
As you can see from the image, it is a very ambitious DIY project.
That is why we asked Johan Bron and his team at Statewide Building Project for some advise.
The Project
Hi Johan.
My garden is not a garden at all. Due to the amount of trees in it there is not much sun light coming through and as such we are having extreme difficulty maintaining a proper lawn.
We have decided that we would like to landscape the garden with a terrace by making use of cement slabs. As this would

Welded wire mesh is a metal wire screen used for reinforcing in the building industry. It is made up of low carbon steel wire. Statewide Building Products supplies Galvanized, Rectangular, 100, 200 and 300mm square welded wire mesh in the Perth and Western Australia region. Our range of products are ACRS Certified and AS/NZS 4671 Compliant.
The AS/NZS 4671 compliance sets out specifications for Australian and New Zealand Steel reinforcing materials (bars, coils and welded mesh). Requirements for chemical, mechanical and physical properties for three different strength grades and the three different ductility classes are also covered.
The ACRS Certification is a quality compliance scheme. It is designed to assure the quality of materials specified and delivered to site, irrespective of origin, are not eroded through the supply of potentially non-complying materials.
At Statewide Building Products the certification and compliance of our reinforcing materials are as important to us as our
