How to calculate how many metal roof sheets your project needs

Australians are massively growing in favour of metal roofing.

It’s durable, low-maintenance, energy-efficient, offers fire protection and looks good doing it.

However, one problem many DIYers face when installing metal roofing is figuring out the number of roof sheets their project will need. This can be a daunting task, especially if you don't have any prior experience in construction or roofing.

So, to help with this challenge, we’ve put together a simple set of steps to help you calculate how many roof sheets you’ll need for your building project.

Step 1: Measure the roof area

The first step in calculating how many metal roof sheets you need will be to measure the roof area. You can do this by measuring the length and width of the roof and multiplying the two values together to get the total area (in square metres).

For example, if your roof is 10m long and 6m wide, the total area of the roof would be 60m2 (10 x 6 = 60).

It's important to measure the roof accurately to avoid potential wastage or shortage of metal roof sheets.

Step 2: Determine the sheet size and profile

The next step is to choose the sheet size and profile of your metal roof sheets. The design and pitch of your roof will influence your decision here.

Metal roof sheets come in various sizes and profiles. The standard metal roof sheet sizes are 1.8m, 2.4m and 3.6m in length, and 762mm and 840mm in width.

The profile refers to the shape and design of the sheet, such as corrugated, ribbed or standing seam. The profile you choose will depend on the aesthetic and functional requirements of your roof.

At Statewide Building Products, we can cut all metal roofing to length, so we can provide custom sheet sizes and profiles to fit your specific requirements.

Step 3: Calculate the number of metal roof sheets

Once you have determined the roof area, sheet size and profile, you can then calculate the number of metal roof sheets needed for your project. To do this, divide the total roof area by the area covered by one metal roof sheet.

Using the example above, if you’ve chosen metal roof sheets that are 3.6m long by 840mm, they would each cover an area of 3m2 (3.6 x 0.84 = 3.02).

With a roof size of 60m2, divide it by 3m2 to get the number of sheets needed (60 ÷ 3.02 = 19.87).

So, you would need 20 metal roof sheets. (Always round up to the nearest sheet if you don’t get a whole number.)

It's important to note that the number of metal roof sheets needed may vary depending on the pitch of your roof. If your roof has a high pitch, you may need additional sheets to ensure adequate coverage and prevent leaks.

Step 4: Consider overlap and waste

Don’t stop there. When calculating the number of metal roof sheets you need, it's important to account for overlap and wastage.

Overlap is the amount of sheet material that overlaps at the joints between sheets, ensuring a watertight seal. The amount of overlap required will depend on the profile of the sheet and the pitch of your roof.

It’s always recommended to add a few extra sheets to your calculations to account for wastage, overlaps and any cut-outs for vents and skylights. It's better to have a couple of extra sheets than to run out in the middle of the project!

Calculating how many roof sheets you need can be challenging, but by following the steps outlined above, you can avoid unnecessary delays and expenses by determining the right number of roof sheets needed for your project.
